“My family and other animals” is autobiographical book that describes life of one family living on the Greek island of Corfu. Author of this book is Gerald Durrell, British naturalist, zookeeper, conservationist, author and television presenter. He is also author of the following books: “Corfu trilogy: My family and other animals, Birds, Beasts and Relatives, The Garden of the Gods”; “The Mockery Birds”, “The Amateur Naturalist”, “The New Noah” and many others.
In the “My family and other animals” Gerald Durrell describes time that he spent living on the Corfu with his mother, two brothers and sister from 1935 until 1939. Gerald was 10 years old when his family came to Corfu and he was the youngest in the family. He immediately fell in love with nature and wild life on the Corfu and had often surprised family by bringing some animal home.
The book is written in humorous manner with a lot of funny events happening as a product of family’s different characters and Gerald’s obsession with the wildlife. It’s also fascinating to see young Gerald’s dedication to wildlife, dedication that lead him later in life to become naturalist, to travel the world, to establish the zoo, and start his TV show. Gerald’s story should encourage parents to support their children dreams, regardless how they seem to them. I admire to Gerald as a boy ready to follow his passion to which he stays truthful throughout his whole life. Also, I really liked Gerald’s ability to notice the details and how he projects on animals some of the people characteristics.
I had such a great time reading this book. It’s amazing book that will remind you of childhood and of natural beauties around us. It will also remind you to enjoy and appreciate life in you and around you. “My family and other animals” is such a wonderful book that should be essential on every reading list.
